SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Jan. 25, 2013 -- Alcohol Justice is reporting that youth, adults, and community organizations from across Marin County who have banded together to create an Alcopop-Free Zone™ will demonstrate tomorrow in front of a Canal Neighborhood business to encourage it to voluntarily end the sale of youth-attractive alcopops.

What: Rally, Community Event, Music, BMX Demo, Free Food, Contests, Prizes

When: Saturday, January 26, 2013, 12-4 PM

Where: Circle K (convenience store and gas station), 981 Francisco Blvd. East, San Rafael, CA 94901

Food: Churro Station

Why:
Youth-attractive alcopops, or flavored malt beverages (FMBs):
  • Are pre-mixed, sweetened alcoholic drinks that taste like juice and soda
  • Are packaged in brightly-colored cans, similar to energy drinks
  • Are priced low enough to effectively target underage drinkers, especially young women
  • Can be shelved wherever beer is available - including convenience stores and gas stations
  • Come in "binge in a can" supersized 24 oz. single-serving containers with 12 percent alcohol – the equivalent of 4-5 beers and cannot be consumed responsibly by any age drinker
  • Encourage underage consumption leading to serious alcohol-related harm
