Community Members Welcome
Alcohol Justice will host a community holiday gathering at its offices in the Canal District of San Rafael (24 Belvedere St., San Rafael, CA 94901) on December 20th, 2024 from 6-9 p.m. to launch its new youth prevention program – NextGen Youth Advocates™. The event is free. Local youth and their families are welcome, and we are happy to offer a fun mix of presentations, games, prizes, music, food (courtesy Taquizas Los Cuñados), and a celebratory pinata.
Our NextGen Youth Advocates™ will use the opportunity to address the community. Along with providing substance use prevention education, they will be asking for community support to join the campaign protesting the manufacturing and distribution of MGA Entertainment’s “Make it Mini – Happy Hour” alcohol-themed toys. This event aims to raise awareness in the Canal community about these products hitting the shelves of family-oriented stores, and what the community can do about it.
By raising awareness, NextGen Youth Advocates aim to remove youth-targeted, alcohol-centric products such as these from stores. The Miniverse “Happy Hour” toys are not just a fun plaything. They are gateways to normalizing and trivializing alcohol use. These toys, which include miniature bottles, make it yourself resin “cocktail,” and bar accoutrements, may seem innocent, but they send a dangerous message: alcohol consumption is not restricted to adulthood, but rather something kids should think of as play.
