Big Alcohol Funding Produces Deceptive Reports Marginalizing Alcohol-Related Health Problems

May 5, 2016

Earlier this week, Dr. Michael Siegel, Professor at Boston University School of Public Health, revealed some interesting truths behind a recent research review conducted by alcohol industry-funded entitles. The research forum claims that moderate drinking improves health.

In his blog, Dr. Siegel, discusses the deception of this research and it’s attempt to look “unbiased” to the public. It turns out that five of the research reviewers have a conflict of interest by virtue by either serving on alcohol industry-funded organizations or having received research funding from Big Alcohol brands. it is also important to note that all 14 members who reviewed this research have previously drawn a conclusion in the same direction. Dr. Siegel then poses a critical question, ‘How can we expect a “balanced” review?’

The Noose Begins to Tighten on US Alcohol Ads.

May 5, 2016

According to the World Health Organization, alcohol consumption accounts for three millions deaths annually. While the cost of alcohol-releated harm continue to rise, alcohol marketing and advertising is also set at an all time high. US reporters are finally shedding light on this important public health issue. The American Journal of Drug & Alcohol Abuse have conducted extensive research on the relationship between brand-specific alcohol advertising and underage alcohol consumptions. The results concluded that underage drinkers were found to be 5 more times likely to consume alcohol brands that were advertised.

The alcohol industry spends an estimated one million a year on advertising, and a good portion of theseads are placed on public transit. This is a huge public health concern and it is important that our communities take action to keep public transit alcohol ad-free.  This is a global health concern and it demands to be addressed before it causes increased harm. Turkey and Indonesia have set exceptional examples by placing a blanket media ban, and it is important the rest of the world follows suit.

On Saturday, April 29, 2016, Youth For Justice, a community-building project of alcohol industry watchdog Alcohol Justice, held their Annual Youth Leader Summit at the offices of Alcohol Justice in the Canal neighborhood of San Rafael.

The summit, sponsored by the San Rafael Alcohol and Drug Coalition, brought together 40 youth leaders from Marin and other Bay Area communities, providing a supportive forum for networking and peer learning.

The theme for this year’s event was "Healing" -- self, community, Mother Earth. Through a process facilitated by John Mahkewa (Peacemaker, Hopi Tribe Member, and resident of Quechan Reservation, Yuma, AZ) participants shared their healing practices and what has helped them to navigate through difficult times. They also shared their commitment to making a difference by sharing their visions and stories of activism to reduce harm in their communities. Participants also enjoyed entertainment provided by the band Human Assembly.

Youth For Justice is grateful for the generous supporters of this year’s Annual Youth Leader Summit: San Rafael Alcohol and Drug Coalition, University of San Francisco, Florencio González, American Soil, Picante Taqueria, and Alcohol Justice.
